What Motivates Someone to Be a Sperm Donor?

Similar to other living tissue donations such as a liver or kidney, or blood and bone marrow, sperm donations offer a chance for life. Without our donors, Bellevue Sperm Bank clients would not be able to grow their families, and we are so grateful to them for their generosity. But what drives someone to become a donor at BSB? To find out, we asked some men in our program why they chose to donate sperm.

One man, donor #14057, said he donates to “help bring happiness to others that cannot otherwise have a family.” Another donor, #12394, is sympathetic to infertility conditions that lead some clients to use a sperm bank in the first place, saying “This is an easy way to give back and help people struggling with fertility.”

Of course, the financial rewards are also attractive, and BSB is happy to to support donors with added income. Rockwell, donor #14034, initially became a donor because he was looking for ways to help make ends meet. After joining the program, he began to see the bigger significance of donating and why it’s so important to many people:

“I spend a lot of time working the gig economy (Lyft, Uber Eats, dog-walking and grocery-delivery),” he said. “The donor program is a great way for me to get some extra spending money between shifts. But I didn’t realize before how needed donors are. I’m happy to provide this blessing to couples in need.”

So, from us to all BSB parents and donors, thank you for doing what you do. Your donation is immeasurable and appreciated. Here’s what Garfield, donor #10354, would like to share with other men considering becoming a donor: “You’re about to start something where you can genuinely help people, which is amazing and can improve people’s lives forever, so be proud of that.”
